My NYSC Diary – Day 13

2–3 minutes

8:00 am- I’m awake. This is the longest I’ve slept since I came here. Most of my roommates are preparing to attend camp fellowship. I say I’m going to stream church online. Some of my roommates are talking about the pageant. One of them says some of the contestants received a paper with the answers. I and the other girls correct her. They all received sheets of paper with possible questions and answers. I know because I was with Cici. I don’t think the competition was partial.

8:30 am- Breakfast is bread, butter and tea. I call Cici to help keep mine. I’m working on my diary.

11:00 am- I do laundry and prepare for the day. We have a meeting at the clinic by 1 pm.

1:00 pm- I quickly eat and join the meeting. We discuss the upcoming carnival and our presentations. We discuss our costumes and donations. Emma announces that our corper chief medical director should be careful as they are people that want to have his head because they believe he refused their relocation. He’s unbothered. We discuss cases of relocation requests doctors have interviewed. Someone came to request relocation because he wants to sleep with his wife and he’s not coping well. Another said she has asthma yet she doesn’t know how to use an inhaler. Another says he has tonic-clonic epilepsy yet he forgot his medications at home. Someone faked a report for breast cancer. I mean how far can one go for relocation?

2:00 pm- Lunch is Jollof and chicken. The chicken is almost nonexistent as usual and the rice is fair.

4:00 pm- Sunday chill is over. We are supposed to go to the parade for drills and parade. The clinic becomes full suddenly. From morning till 4, nobody was sick but now that they’ve blown the bugle, everyone is now sick by osmosis. We, the medics start to get irritated. The clinic is choked up. We are the ones who would get in trouble if any of the soldiers come in because they would think we are hiding them. I and Dr B make an announcement for people to leave immediately after they are attended to. The cleaner comes to clean and we leave. I’m sitting outside watching the rehearsals. I cover my face; if my platoon commander sees me, punishment will be my second name. We are watching the parade when one person collapses and another falls badly.

6:00 pm- Cici is feeling unwell. It’s malaria. We go to the Pharmacy at Mami to buy soft gels. She only takes soft gels and we don’t have them at the clinic. They are too expensive. I buy snickers and popcorn. Everyone at the clinic notices how quiet Cici is. Our medical Miss NYSC. We are trying to make sure she’s comfortable with everybody telling me to take care of her. Wahala for who no get friend.

8:00 pm- Dance and drama competition resumes. I plug in my earpiece and watch YouTube videos. The event doesn’t last long.

9:15 pm- I return to the hostel. I didn’t even do many activities today but I’m very tired.
